Summary

Through the use of AR, Üphoria provides the trans community a safe and low-risk way to experiment and play with different body possibilities.

Through the privacy of a user’s phone, they can create a window into another gender euphoric reality.

Challenge

Create an AR mobile app experience that can help trans people feel gender euphoria, or at least less gender dysphoria.

Solution

Initial Concept

Through the power of AR, Üphoria allows users to change various parts of their body in a gender affirming way. The target users are those experiencing gender dysphoria and body dysmorphia – trans, nonbinary, and intersex people – who may or may not be considering surgical and/or hormonal gender affirming interventions.

Users are able to adjust chest size and shape, genital type, levels of scarring, facial hair, and face shape. This app functions as a medical resource, gender euphoria aid, and mental health tool.

Features

A live AR experience allows you to move around and explore your body.

Black Trans Women

Marsh P. Johnson - Gay and Trans Rights Activist

Black trans women are the reason we (trans people) experience the freedoms we have today. Full stop. We must support and love them.

Stonewall was because of them, their courage, their sacrifice, and their love. Black trans women and trans women of colour continue to be the driving force of queer and trans rights. Thank you for all the work you have done and continue to do. <3

User Personas

The nature of this project demands inclusiveness; there are multitudes of trans people from all walks of life with different stories and struggles. With the initial scope and limited time frame of this project, I only created two user personas.

UI: Iteration 1

Pros

  • Was able to work through features, layout, and information architecture
  • Created a robust proof of concept and interactive prototype
  • Experimented with various design techniques and aesthetics

Cons

  • Major focus on colour (to an overwhelming degree)
  • Overall aesthetic, while meaning to reference the Pride flag, looks childish
  • Colors began unintentionally creating associations (example: "masc" with "genderqueer")
  • Design was not cohesive throughout

Take-Aways

  • Less is more!
  • Remember your colour theory and basic design principles
  • Don't get distracted by ALL of the bright colours
  • Try to create a cohesive voice throughout the design
  • Remember your audience
  • Style must work with substance, not against

Splash screen and two setup screens

UI: Iteration 2

Iteration 2 is currently in progress. My guiding principles throughout this iteration are:

  • The user informs everything
  • Remember your audience!
  • Keep humanity in the design
  • Don't overcomplicate things
  • Honour the process

Onboarding screens

Wireframes: Digital and IRL

By nature, AR requires both physical and digital prototyping. Users must navigate their physical environment, while simultaneously keeping track of what is happening on their device.

For this app to be successful, a full understanding of how a user might move and hold their phone must be considered.

In what kinds of spaces will this app be used?

Physical Environment

  • Private spaces with a mirror
  • Bedrooms
  • Bathrooms
  • Dressing rooms
  • Doctors' offices

Results

Next steps

For this project to develop, further research and user testing needs to be done. I am planning to write and conduct a questionnaire for my target audience, from which further iterations and analyses will be made.

The questionnaire will gather both qualitative and quantitative data about gender experience, identity, sexuality, physiology, and demographics.

  • Questionnaire development
  • Questionnaire dissemination (social media and community contacts)
  • Results analysis and synthesis
  • Revision of iteration 2
  • User testing
